    Biography

    Ryan P. Wilson is a Senior Physician Assistant who joined UCSF Medical Center's Department of Surgery as the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program Coordinator in 2014. He participates in advanced minimally invasive (Laparoscopic) cases, robotic operations utilizing UCSF's da Vinci Xi Surgical System, endoscopic procedures and open bariatric revisional surgeries alongside Drs. Stanley Rogers, Jonathan Carter, Andrew Posselt, and Matthew Lin.  Additionally, he 1st assists in a variety of general surgery, MIS and robotic cases as needed (e.g. Paraesophageal hernia repairs, Nissen fundoplication, esophagectomy, simple and complex ventral and inguinal hernia repairs, appendectomies, and cholecystectomies etc.). 

    Wilson graduated from Touro University, CA with dual Masters of Science Degrees in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) and Public Health (MPH). During his rigorous graduate education he excelled not only in academics but also through leadership as the College of Health Sciences Class President. He completed his extensive graduate level clinical training at several hospitals and private practices with diverse patient populations throughout California and Nevada including highly sought after rotations at Kaiser Fremont Center for Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery & Laparoscopic Bariatric Specialty Center and a world renown plastic surgery rotation with Dr. Andrew Ordon and Dr. Ritu Chopra in Beverly Hills, CA.

    Prior to joining UCSF Wilson practiced emergency medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s level one trauma center in San Jose, CA. He then moved to three emergency departments working concurrently at CPMC, St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, CA, Sutter Santa Rosa Medical Center in Santa Rosa, CA, and Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport, CA. He also brings with him skills in wound care and occupational health from his time at Kentfield Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospital. Wilson is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  As well, he is an active member of the following professional organizations: California Academy of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. 

    Wilson has lead the UCSF Bariatric Program’s success through collaboration with the Director of Bariatric Surgery and over his tenure at UCSF has guided the Bariatric Surgery Program through 2 national Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) recertification cycles each achieving the maximum accreditation period of 3 years and maximum designation as a Comprehensive Center (Center of Excellence).  Through his leadership and dedicated efforts the Bariatric Surgery Program has been granted the prestigious title of UCSF Destination Program.  The program continues to flourish and grow with the new hire of the LVN Bariatric Coordinator and a 2nd Bariatric Physician Assistant.

    In collaboration with Elliazar Enriquez, Senior LVN, Wilson and Enriquez have launched the novel “Pathways to Weight Loss Surgery Clinic” to further streamline the process from new patient appointment to bariatric surgery.  In addition Wilson continues to lead the UCSF Bariatric Surgery Program’s growth by helping to establish Bariatric Surgery Outreach Clinics and through countless quality improvement initiatives such as the MBSAQIP’s national Decreasing Readmissions through Opportunities Provided (DROP) Program, UCSF’s Meds to Beds Program, assisting in research projects, updating and developing new patient education materials, and by training new hire Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and other staff  as well as through assisting with the education of Residents and Medical Students.
