Dr. Andre Campbell Named Inaugural Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We are pleased to announce that Andre Campbell, M.D. has been named the Inaugural Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Campbell is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery and an attending trauma surgeon at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG).
As Vice Chair for DEI, Dr. Campbell will provide vision and leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the department’s clinical, research and training enterprise. He will partner with the Department’s Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Development and Vice Chair for Education to create an organizational culture that promotes DEI values. Dr. Campbell will also work closely with the faculty, division chiefs, and residency and fellowship program leaders to enhance diversity among candidates for faculty and residency positions, and to help eliminate bias in the screening and selection processes.
Dr. Campbell received a BA in Biology from Harvard University, and earned his MD at the UCSF School of Medicine. He then completed residencies in Internal Medicine and General Surgery and a Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. For two decades, Dr. Campbell has served as the Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at ZSFG as well as Medical Director of the Trauma Intensive Care Unit there, and was the long-time Director of the UCSF Surgery Clerkship. His research and clinical interests include the ICU care of trauma patients, acute lung injury after trauma, the abdominal compartment syndrome, and surgical education. In 2019, he was selected as a full member of the American College of Surgeons Master Surgical Educator group.
Dr. Campbell is well known for his commitment to diversity, social justice, and for his tireless work against gun violence. As Vice Chair, he will be a courageous and articulate advocate for DEI in our Department and on behalf of UCSF Surgery on a local and national stage.
