UCSF Department of Surgery Accepting Applications for 2020 Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship for Fourth Year Medical Students
The UCSF Department of Surgery is accepting applications for the Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship. All eligible medical students are invited to apply no later than June 1, 2020*. The Fellowship is offered to fourth year medical students as a sub-internship, providing the opportunity to experience first-hand the Department's multi-faceted environment of clinical excellence, inquiry, and investigation. The Fellowship provides a stipend of $2,500.00 to defray the cost of tuition, transportation, housing, and incidental expenses. Recipients of the fellowship award will be selected based on academic career potential. A maximum of two stipends is awarded for each academic year.
The Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship was established in 2017 to foster the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority academic surgeons. Haile T. Debas, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Director Emeritus of the UC Global Health Institute (UCGHI), is world-renowned for his contributions to academic medicine and widely consulted on issues of global health. His storied career as a physician, researcher, professor, and academic leader spans over four decades in Canada and the U.S. Dr. Debas previously served as Chair of the Department of Surgery, Dean of the School of Medicine, Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, and was Founding Executive Director of UCSF Global Health Sciences.
