UCSF Department of Surgery: Parenting in Surgery Mentorship Program
Becoming a parent is hard work, especially when balancing the new role as a parent with surgical training. We have created a New Parent Mentorship Program in the UCSF Department of Surgery to provide a support network of trainees and faculty. The Mentorship program was successfully launched with a social gathering at Spark Social SF. The event included a kid’s play area, an abundance of food, and the opportunity for medical students, trainees, faculty, and their families to meet, mingle, and foster relationships.
The University of California, San Francisco Department of Surgery is committed to protecting the health and well-being of faculty and learners, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and training the next generation of surgeons. In these efforts, the department has prioritized supporting family planning during surgical training with UCSF’s "Parenting in Surgery" initiative. The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Muriel Steele Society, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and UCSF Lactation Accommodation Program. The goals of this initiative are to create a culture of understanding, share best practices across disciplines and institutions, and develop innovative strategies to advocate for parent surgeons.
