Dr. Shareef Syed Named Associate Director of the UCSF Surgical Skills Center
The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the selection of Shareef Syed, MBChB, MRCS, assistant professor in the division of Transplant Surgery, as the new Associate Director of the UCSF Surgical Skills Center.
Dr. Syed is a general surgeon specializing in abdominal transplantation. After earning his medical degree at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, Dr. Syed completed 3 years of medical and surgical residency in the UK National Health Service (NHS). During this time, he was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons, UK. Dr. Syed completed his general surgery residency at Central Michigan University and then UCSF, graduating as a Chief Resident in 2016. He then completed a two-year abdominal transplant fellowship at UCSF. He joined our faculty in 2016.
As a new faculty member, Dr. Syed already has made valuable contributions in both undergraduate and graduate medical education. He serves as the educational lead for the transplant surgery rotation and, in 2019, received a faculty teaching award. During the COVID19 pandemic, he successfully adapted the preparatory course for graduating medical students in a virtual format. In his new role, he will work on curriculum expansion for senior residents, skills assessment, and education scholarship. Dr. Syed’s role also will include supporting the newly initiated Surgical Educator research fellowship and the enhanced senior resident training program.
The American College of Surgeons accredits the UCSF Surgical Skills Center, and it is one of the crown jewels of the Department’s teaching enterprise. It provides simulation-based longitudinal and structured curricula, enabling learners to master both basic and advanced operative techniques. The lab also supports educational scholarship in teaching, curricular development, and research as a pathway to an academic career in surgical education. Dr. Syed will work with Dr. Hueylan Chern, the Director.
Please join the Department of Surgery in congratulating Dr. Syed on his appointment!
