Four Surgery Residents Awarded UCSF CTSI Resident Research Funding

UCSF Surgery residents were well-represented as awardees of the UCSF CTSI Spring 2020 Resident Research Funding Award. Mark Barry, M.D., Zachary Matthay, M.D. (General Surgery research residents), Adam Wallace, M.D. (Plastic Surgery research resident), and Ava Yap, M.D.. M.H.Sc. (General Surgery PGY3 resident) were all recipients of this highly competitive award.
Dr. Barry's award will support his project, "Mitigating Vascular Dysfunction and Lung Injury in Trauma with Human Blood Products in a Murine Model of Trauma/Hemorrhagic Shock" under the mentorship of Shibani Pati, M.D., Ph.D. and Deborah Stein, M.D., MPH, FACS, FCCM.
Dr. Matthay's award will support his project, "Impact of Catecholamines on Platelet Function after Injury", which he is conducting under the mentorship of Lucy Kornblith, M.D.
Dr. Wallace's award will support his project, "The Effect of Pectoral Blocks on Perioperative pain in Simple Mastectomy and Breast Reduction in Gender Affirmation Surgery" under the mentorship of Esther Kim, M.D.
Dr. Yap's award will support her project on "Prevalence and Adequacy of Lymph Node Yield in Lymph Node Dissection for Pediatric Papillary Thyroid Cancer" under the mentorship of Sanziana Roman, M.D., FACS.
The Resident Clinical and Translational Research Funding program provides up to $4000 for clinical and translational research expenses to all awardees. Results of the funded research work are eligible for submission to the annual CTST-sponsored Resident Research Symposium.
