Dr. Stanley Rogers Named Interim Chief of the Division of General Surgery Succeeding Dr. Hobart Harris
It is with deep gratitude that we announce Dr. Hobart Harris will be stepping down as Chief of the Division of General Surgery, effective August 31, 2020. Dr. Harris has served as Chief of General Surgery with distinction since 2002. He also served in the capacity of Vice-Chair of the Department from 2002-2008 and 2013-2018. He will continue as a Professor of Surgery and active faculty member.
Dr. Harris has received regional and national recognition for his clinical expertise, as evidenced by his leadership roles and reputation in the clinical field of surgery. Nationally, he has a robust history of serving on scientific review committees for the National Institutes of Health and the Shriners Hospital for Children. Dr. Harris also has served on several diversity committees for the School of Medicine and as Chair for the Equal Opportunity Committee from 2008 to 2010. Over the years, Dr. Harris has been consistently rated as an excellent teacher by residents, fellows, and medical students. In 2019, he was a recipient of the prestigious Gold-Headed Cane Faculty Award. He stands as an excellent role model as a clinician, educator, and research scientist.
Stepping in as Interim Chief of the Division of General Surgery will be Dr. Stanley James Rogers. He has been an integral member of the Division of General Surgery since 1997. He is currently a professor of clinical surgery at UCSF, serves as Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Division of General Surgery, and is a member of the clinical team at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Rogers has also been responsible for teaching and mentoring surgeons from Thailand to advance their careers in the global academic environment at UCSF. We look forward to his leadership as he takes on this important role.
The sections of Breast, Colorectal, Endocrine, and Hepatobiliary Surgery will become part of the new Division of Surgical Oncology.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Harris for all his wonderful contributions to the Department of Surgery, in his role as Chief of the Division of General Surgery and welcoming Dr. Rogers as Interim Chief. We will look to celebrate Dr Harris’ contributions to the Division and the Department at a later note when we have the opportunity to gather in person as a surgical community.
