Department of Surgery 2020 Achievement and Education Awards Presented at Surgery Grand Rounds
The Department of Surgery celebrated the many achievements of our UCSF Surgery trainees and educators at Surgery Grand Rounds on June 10, 2020, recognizing the tireless hard work and extraordinary talent displayed each and every day by these recipients. In addition, there was a tribute to the late Chief Resident Evan Werlin, MD, the inaugural "Evan Werlin Lodestar Award," accepted by his fiancée, Dr. Alyssa Perez.

Chesson Award for Compassion
The Chesson Award for Compassion, chosen by the faculty, honors a chief resident who has shown outstanding compassion to patients and families in the course of caring for their illness.
Jane Chesson and her family established this award in 1997 to honor Dr. Anthony Azakie after receiving excellent care at UCSF.

The Haile T. Debas Resident Teaching Award, chosen by residents, recognizes the chief
resident who has demonstrated the greatest commitment to teaching the art and science of
surgery to their co-residents and students. It is awarded in honor of Dr. Debas because of his
dedication to teaching, and was established in 2003.

Evan Werlin Lodestar Award
Our chiefs presented the inaugural Evan Werlin Lodestar Award, given to a resident who brightens the culture of surgery and exemplifies courage, strength, and joy as a surgeon – just like Evan always did. The award was accepted on Evan’s behalf by his fiancée.
