Department of Surgery 2020 Achievement and Education Awards Presented at Surgery Grand Rounds

The Department of Surgery celebrated the many achievements of our UCSF Surgery trainees and educators at Surgery Grand Rounds on June 10, 2020, recognizing the tireless hard work and extraordinary talent displayed each and every day by these recipients. In addition, there was a tribute to the late Chief Resident Evan Werlin, MD, the inaugural "Evan Werlin Lodestar Award," accepted by his fiancée, Dr. Alyssa Perez.

Junior Resident Faculty Teaching Award

The award was presented by our interns to Dr. Huey Chern, Director of the UCSF Surgical Skills Lab in recognition of her extraordinary and creative efforts to continue education, even through the pandemic.

The award was presented by our chief residents to modern day trailblazer Dr. Linda Reilly, UCSF  General Surgery Residency Program Director, in recognition of her great achievements in vascular surgery and in education.

Medical Student Teaching Awards

Annual teaching awards are to  both faculty and residents based on student evaluations. Recipients share the common traits of: patience, creating a safe and lively learning environment, ability to incorporate the latest scientific evidence in teaching, inclusion of all students, and model exemplary professional behavior.

Chesson Award for Compassion

The Chesson Award for Compassion, chosen by the faculty, honors a chief resident who has shown outstanding compassion to patients and families in the course of caring for their illness.
Jane Chesson and her family established this award in 1997 to honor Dr. Anthony Azakie after receiving excellent care at UCSF.

Our chiefs presented the inaugural Evan Werlin Lodestar Award, given to a resident who brightens the culture of surgery and exemplifies courage, strength, and joy as a surgeon – just like Evan always did. The award was accepted on Evan’s behalf by his fiancée.
