Application Requirements
Please review the Eligibility Recruitment and Selection Policy before applying.
Applications for the surgery residency program are accepted electronically through ERASĀ®. Applications are considered complete when the following documentation is received through ERAS:
- Common Application Form (CAF)
- CV Report (Generated by the Program from the CAF)
- Personal Statement
- Medical School Transcript(s)
- Dean's Letter (expected after November 1st)
- Three Letters of Recommendation (One Chair letter if possible)
- Official transcripts from NBME indicating USMLE scores (Step 1 and 2 if available)
In addition to the above, students and graduates of international medical schools must provide the following:
- Verification of ECFMG certification (provided through ERAS)
- Verification of ECFMG J-1 visa status. Note: Visas in any other category (B-1, H-1, etc.) cannot be accepted.
- Verification of United States residency status (permanent resident, naturalized citizen, etc.)*
- Copy of valid (unexpired) Medical Board of California Authorization Letter*

*Each interview session also includes a virtual welcome reception the evening prior to interview day
Per the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) recommendation, the first round of interview invitations will be extended between October 26 and November 1, 2023.

We do not conduct interviews for preliminary positions.

SURGERY-PRELIMINARY-General Surgery and Specialty Track

Description:
One year of rotations prior to entering a categorical training program in general surgery, one of the specialties of surgery or a specialty with a close relationship to surgery
Who should apply:
Applicants interested in general surgery, any of the specialties of surgery (such as neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, urological surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology), or any other medical field for which a surgery internship is educationally beneficial (such as anesthesiology, emergency medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, etc).

One year of rotations prior to entering the UCSF interventional radiology integrated program.
Who should apply:
ONLY applicants to the UCSF Interventional Radiology Integrated Categorical Program who have applied to, interviewed for and are ranking the UCSF-IR integrated categorical program. This position is linked with the UCSF IR integrated categorical program (ACGME ID: 4160500006). Those applying to the GS/IR combined program should be sure to carefully follow instructions from the IR program about how to complete the primary and supplemental rank lists.
